Our Drug Culture: The Love of Antibiotics

Added on by Ridzki.

Writer’s notes: When I write “our” on the title I am referring to people in South East Asia or Asia Pacific and most particularly in Indonesia. Last time I fall sick, I was doing an experiment on myself. Not that I fall sick due to the experiment, I was experimenting on how long I could recover fully from the sickness by not coming to the doctor and moreover to not consume any antibiotic to recover myself.

It took me a month.

The people here loves their antibiotic and especially the doctor that prescribe them with the antibiotic. A doctor which could cure their patients in a single visit, is a good doctor and very kind as well, because not only the patients get cured easily they also kind of doctor who won’t take any advantage of the patients. But how will it affect the general populations in the future? while science and medical students are very aware of the term ”super-bugs”, the general population do not. The continuos bombardment of antibiotic, and the low understanding regarding the use is giving way to these “super-bugs” to increase in the terms of numbers and kinds.

What are the “super-bugs?”

They could be present as the insects which capable to resist the strongest insecticide, or as the infamous Methicillin Resistant Streptococcus Aureus (MRSA), regardless of the name they could only mean one thing. Trouble.

Like every species, this super-bugs have come a long way, they evolve from the most primitive form to the ones which contain all the necessity to survive. Humans evolve from apes (creationists please do not argue on this), as a species we learn to use tools and to exploit the nature in order to gain the favour, whether to hunt or gather, in a simpler word, we learn how to survive. These super-bugs are also the same, although they don’t use tools they survive because of the difference in their genetic material.

Consider the case of the white butterfly on the height of Industrial revolution in England. They originally were white in colour, because living in a temperate climate they need the colour tone in order to survive from their hunter. however some of them born in a unusual circumstances, with black instead of white as their wings. Easier to be recognised, easier to be hunted is the fate of these black butterfly, however the Industrial Revolution came, and the usual white snow was polluted to become black, and the condition was altered. For the benefit of the story let’s just say, nowadays there are more black butterfly than the white one in England.

The story above is the similar picture in the context of the super-bugs, where they actually also the product natural selections, however the one who acts as the “natural selections” are none other than mankind with their love of antibiotics.

"So it's just a little bugger which is difficult to be eliminated?" not exactly. This little bugger causes many hospital acquired infection on patients which are recovering from their diseases and finally could cause complications or even death. The fact that they are more antibiotics resistant, would make them very difficult to eliminate with the present level of antibiotics and if they could be eliminated there is still chances for them to evolved to be resistant to that particular antibiotic.

What can we do?

Consider MRSA as a very expensive experience, we can actually slow down the transformation of other bacteria or viruses to become the next "super-bugs", avoiding arms race between species. How to slow down the transformation is easy that is by do not using antibiotic in order to cure non-significant diseases (common cold, sore throat, fever etc.). The problems (sigh) lies on whether people could understand that they are not supposed to take antibiotic as simple as taking candy.

To raise awareness about this antibiotic issue is the solution, however is not the same as raising awareness about issues like the global warming. It is more like putting a warning on cigarettes' pack  to tell people the hazard to your health, however it seldom kept them away from smoking. Furthermore, by telling this, people must accept that evolution is real and we are part of it, while in this region people still believe that evolution is a concept where man comes from primate.

It would be long and lengthy process to educate the people, perhaps as long as the development of the new super-bugs, however as it is necessary to be done, none is too late after all.

The movement could began in hospitals or clinics by doctors, in which if there are any patients coming with the symptoms of cold or fever try to explain to them that the disesase did not require the administration of antibiotics, just plenty of rest and liquids and paracetamols is enough. Of course doctor, have to be more than able to explain the matter to the patients and that requires a great communication skills.

What can a patient do then? other than educating themselves, patients are also having the rights to have the proper explanations from the doctor and finally do not judge the doctor based on what medication that they give you or how long does it takes to recover.

As a final notes, I will say that prevention is better than care thus live your life healthily and love your vessels, you can't actually change them anytime if you have trouble.

Cheers

Tell me the answer please?

Do you know the difference between the prepared & the unprepared? One would have a parachute ready from a falling plane, the others would only have prayers so death could come as quickly as it is and no pain would be involved.

Do you know the differences between the wanted and unwanted?

The ones with the parachute would have people waiting for their return, because everybody would think that every passengers are given a parachute.

And finally, in an interesting twist of fate, guess which position am I in now?

Happy New Year Everyone!

Added on by Ridzki.

Although it seemed too cliché, yet we are still keen to repeat the greeting for centuries. and thus in the beginning of this year I am wishing you all to be patient, as at the end of the year we are faced with injustice, war and the reality that our progressions is meant so little compared to the regression that we took. Therefore in the happiness that most of us gained, there should also be a concern for our step backwards. In this occasion as well I would like to present a little promises, which some people called as "New Year's Resolutions", while people in the mental health awareness have been notifying the hazard of making a resolutions. I personally still think that this is need to be done over the course of years, to keep ourselves in the track of life and achieve our personal goals.

Therefore, these are my New Year's Resolutions:

1. Be more wiser and ready to take actions.

2. Be a loving person for her.

3. Be closer to God, my family and her.

4.  Get my driver's license.

5. Read more.

6. Write more.

7. Open up to new people , their way of life , the way they think and their beliefs and be tolerant about it.

8. Learn to save up my money.

9. Go even greener (target: use no plastic bag at all).

10.  Get healthy and stay that way.

Well that's about it and hopefully I could keep up to it

Cheers.

Something Mediocre for Someone Special

Added on by Ridzki.

I guess when a person consider somebody in their life special, they will choose their words carefully around that person, they will act, behave and told things differently compared what that person actually do in real life well at least that holds true for me for me. Because I don’t think somebody so special deserve something so mediocre.

However, how mediocre a word is or sentences are they will build up into something special.

And with this I would say something mediocre for someone special for me:

I am sorry if I ever let you down I am sorry if I ever make you sad or mad I am sorry for everything that I’ve done.

But I love you and I really do

And now the distance had separated us, I began to fill there’s something had been missing Something that can be filled by you. I miss you and I really do.

Lightcraft and Silent Scenery Album Launch

Added on by Ridzki.

Update: It seems that Junk Magazine have fully adopted this writing without even acknowledging me or Azhana (yeaa they acknowledge her by saying she provided additional info). My comments for this matter; please don't do it again Junk, it is rude and will make your magazine loses credibility; and secondly when you get "additional infos" from other person, just make sure that you have understood what the infos are all about, for example Lightcraft bassist went MIA not actually the name of the bassist is MIA. It was a great day for a great event for music, two took place in Malaysia and another in Singapore. Leave all the Asia Awards and Fest to the other music fans and journalist. I am here to write a review regarding an event took place in The Annexe Gallery. Lightcraft and Silent Scenery, two well known indie bands in Malaysia, are deciding to release their album together, a debut for Silent Scenery and sophomore for Lightcraft. Along the night there are also performances from other great names such as Leaders on Sunday, Lurks (last minute replacement for Telebury) and Inspirative coming all the way from Thailand.

Being fashionably late, the event kicked off at 8.30 PM, started by Leaders on Sunday, self proclaimed crunk band which are motored by 3 of their member Rushdi, Shariman and Nabil. The guys give out an upbeat set for all the people that have been waiting, at one point during their show the MC tell out that the band were formed because one of the member girlfriend is ditching him because she attracted to some underwear model.

Leaders on Sunday

Second on the bill is Inspirative, hailing all the way from Thailand this band had already make head turns during their check sound sessions. It's unique and fresh, like how tom yum soup will make you warm and then continued with mango rice which are cool and soothing. The band played mostly their instrumental track with one (or is it two?) tracks with lyrics. This band really is the black horse of the night providing the great mood swing.

Inspirative

On the third, there is one of the main show of the night, Silent Scenery, equipped with a celloist the band which describe themselves as emotronic, rocked out with the audience. At one time the vocalist Kit, said that the band will play differently than the other band as they would not stopped between songs, strangely they did, but it was forgiveable as they started to explain about the event and how they met with Lightcraft and planning the event together.

Silent Scenery

Next on the stage is Lurks being the last minute replacement for Telebury, they really are not dissapointing. Sounded like Depeche Mode or some might say Joy Division, they are the most rocking out band of the night. Again the mood of the audience is being changed drastically to a bit dark, I guess it is quite needed to ensure that the audience is still in the place and kept interested.

Lurks

Lastly come the star of the show, although this event can be said that it is a collaboration between Lightcraft and Silent Scenery, most of the audience were clearly waiting for Lightcraft on stage. They come out with almost their original formation with the exception of Efry on bass. The sound of Lightcraft although still very British, are being added with more complexity and maturity especially on the track All In My Mind and The Girl Who Went to War. Imam being the front man are clearly very nervous on that night, however, that did not make their performance become any less entertaining.  There are quite a few surprise on the night especially when they are trying to play their first Indonesia song, which surprisingly great sounding and also when the audience asking for the encore which come answered by playing I Don't Know What It Is.

Lightcraft

Finally the event ended, tired but amused the audience went back to their homes, sharing the experience which are clearly could not be found in Genting or Singapore. and yeah.. did I mention we get a free muffins?

Apparently sending SMS to some number with hefty cost will make you change the fortune of your life or changing your destiny here in Indonesia This is even lower compared to the two actresses. sigh.

Stuck in a transition.

Added on by Ridzki.

I am in a period of transition right now, waiting for a revelation which will come soon. For the first time in my life now, I was unsure about things to do with my life, ironically, I feel contented with it. Nevertheless let's try to enjoy this so called "short" holiday

Tools to keep up and running

Added on by Ridzki.

As much as I wanted to keep up this blog, I still haven't figure out how to manage the time writing this while writing my reports as well and sorting out my life. Fortunately lifehacker.com had a post on 10 tools that can help us in keeping up our blog, which is probably could get pretty handy at times. As I read through the commentaries I found out that there is something interesting, it is about  Windows live writer, which is a privilege to Windows users only. My good friend Gerry had mentioned in his post. Unfortunately for OS X user did not have this privilege, which is quite embarrassing as the it had and always been portrayed as the creative machinery.

Well anyway, I would probably try some of the tools provided above, and write another post again.

Support the system shall we?

Added on by Ridzki.

As much as my own annoyance at the system, for it's sometimes confusing, complex, and repetitive. I still feel there's a need to support it, which could be done by improving the factor that is most likely to cause error in the system itself. the human factor. A system in for collecting print jobs in Monash University Malaysia, which I view as a solution for creating order (one person could only take his/her print job and not others) and for the helping of environment (If one person get the print that he/she needed than there is no need to print another set of copies thus it does not waste the paper)has been failed considerably.

As the new semester kicks in the number of students increased considerably and many still don't know how to collect the printing account (shown by many papers which are not collected by them at the end of the day), in which the explanation could be the information is not clear enough, or they are just plain ignorant (in which I hope they would change).

In the end, this is just a very small example in my life, there are larger problems in the world right now. I just hoped that, we all could support the system that is good, criticize ones that is had flaws, and taking the words of Mahatma Gandhi "be the change that you want to see in the world".

Phase out

Added on by Ridzki.

I'm now at KLIA waiting for my flight at 16.00, and when I step my foot inside it, It's the last stage of this phase of life. My life had been divided by phases, which is essentially the period I spend in the community, not only schools but also my life with the people around me. This time another phase would be ended. When there is an end, it ended just like that, and I will begin a new one, with a new spirits and hopes but this time it's different. I don't want it to end.

And I can state many reasons why I did not want it to end, because I fall in love with the most amazing woman, because I love it here, because of I like it to pursue my academic, and simply because I don't want it to end and I don't want to lose anything from here, especially her.

Why is it like this? last time I was free from it all, and I don't want to attach myself if I want to. But now I have attached myself to it, and I don't want to let go. Call me a fool but  a fool is all I wanted to be right now and forever.

And another year almost passed

Added on by Ridzki.

2007 had been very kind to me, in a way that I perceive it. A lot had been happened including in it is my desire to write and creating a blog, as well as my birthday which I can proudly say that I'm legally adult age-wise, but still trying to become more and more mature but at least I can say that I have new perceptions of how life should be, and I'll make those perceptions to become my principles, my guides in many time to come. 2007 is not all just about me, other people perceptions and the world and universe too have evolved become older and hopefully meeting our expectations.I really haven't make any resolutions for 2008, but I think I'll make a few, which is really unlikely for me. Last time it's only hopes that the next year would be better than this, now I wanted new things, I want to graduate from my university and go have a job somewhere, these two are my goals that have to be attained in 2008. Other stuff? I'm still planning it but I wanted to travel somewhere preferably alone, or do some social working, there should be time where we have to reach the community I believe.

In the end I would like to thank God for His eternal blessing, for His forgiveness, for Him I could breath and do my work everyday, as well as everybody that have been supporting me all this year mom dad, my sister, my big family, my significant other and my friends which although I won't be able to meet again with you or I haven't seen you for a long time, trust me we'll get back again under the same sky, breath the same air, and reminisce the old days.

Cheers, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The heart sees what it wanted to feel

Sometimes it's just what makes us suffer, and yet we keep continue to stay on that path, because change is far more frightening than the reality we faced. Therefore there's a need of blessing of understanding and patience on them, because without it, we will live in a place where men suffer while others feel nothing about it.

And about their tragic view on us too, easy for they make judgement, alas we do not do things they accused us.

Cheers

A place where it all began

Added on by Ridzki.

I have just finished unpacking my stuff in my home, that I have left for 8 months now. many have changed here but still one thing remain the same, my allergy against something, was it dust, the mites, the air or anything else that attack me. Somehow, the my presence here did not evoke any of my senses nor did they wake my memories about certain things that have happened here. Was it due to the fact that I was preoccupied with something else or I had been through the phases of this, I’m not to sure either.

Well anyhow accompanied by the mosquitoes and the allergens, my holiday here is began, at my home, a place where it all began.

Cheers
